Dear President Chavez,
Our sincere thanks and congratulations for your decision to prohibit new coalmines and the expansion of existing coalmines in the Indigenous territories of the Sierra de Perija.
With this visionary act, you have set important precedents for the rights of indigenous peoples, environmental protection, and non-fossil fuel energy. Your leadership on these issues plants a seed of hope in a world where so much of our biological and cultural diversity is being destroyed.
We join the Wayuu, Bari and Yukpa Indigenous peoples and the environmental organisations of Venezuela in celebrating your decision.
